DUDLEY, Mass. (Sept.11) – The Nichols College women's tennis team defeated Colby-Sawyer, 7-2, Saturday afternoon in a The Commonwealth Coast Conference match at the Francis W. Robinson Courts. The Bison improve to 4-0 overall and 3-0 in the TCCC, while Colby-Sawyer suffered its first loss on the season and moves to 3-1 overall and 2-1 in conference play.
The Bison held a 2-1 lead after doubles play, with the Chargers pulling out a 9-8 (8-6) win at the top position courtesy of first year Liz Lincoln and sophomore Claire Toffey.
Nichols senior Maria Balabanova (Moscow, Russia) and sophomore Megan Woodruff (Morris, Conn.) dispatched their opponents in the fifth and sixth singles spots without dropping a game and junior Chelsey Miller (Salem, Conn.) followed with a straight-sets win in the fourth flight, dropping just one game along the way to give Nichols the win.
Lincoln gave the visitors their other point at the second singles spot with a 6-3, 6-1 win over Jillian McQuiggan (Weymouth, Mass.), but Anna Dyakiv (Amsterdam, N.Y.) lost one game in her straight-sets win at the top spot and Alex Cifone (Bristol, Conn.) finished out the match with a 6-4, 6-2 win over Toffey at the fourth flight.
Nichols hosts Roger Williams on Wednesday in a 3:30 TCCC match before hitting the road for a pair of conference matches. Colby-Sawyer travels to Curry College the same afternoon for a 3:30 conference match.
