DUDLEY, Mass. (April 9) – Nichols College recognized 130 of its student-athletes for their excellence in academics and athletics on Friday as part of National Student-Athlete Day. The students honored at the special ceremony, held in Nichols' Auditorium, have maintained a cumulative grade-point average of over 3.0 and are members of at least one of the Bison's 15 varsity programs. Keynote speaker Bill Pieczynski, Associate Vice President for Advancement, addressed the group prior to the awards ceremony.
In addition, Director of Athletics Charlyn Robert inducted 26 juniors and seniors into the National College Athlete Honor Society, Chi Alpha Sigma, joining seven two-year honorees. Nichols is the ninth local chapter in Massachusetts to honor members based on outstanding scholarship (a minimum 3.4 grade point average based on a 4.0 scale), earned athletic letter winner, and excellent character and citizenship.
National Student-Athlete Day has been an annual event since 1987. It is America's day to celebrate outstanding student-athletes who have achieved excellence in academics and athletics while having made significant contribution to the community. It is also a time to recognize those parents, teachers, coaches and school systems which make it possible for young people to find the balance between academics and athletics.
