Box Score COCOA, Fla. (March 18) – The Salisbury University baseball team outlasted Nichols, 13-9, Thursday afternoon as the teams combined for 26 hits at the Cocoa Expo. Nichols wraps up its southern swing on Friday morning with a game against Hilbert.
Salisbury held a 9-2 lead after three innings thanks in part to three home runs – including a second-inning grand slam – but Nichols rallied with a run in the fifth and four in the sixth on six hits. Al Montalto (Wilmington, Mass.) led off with a double and after one out, three-straight hits plated runs. Nichols got another run on two more singles before the inning was over to cut the Seagulls' lead to two at 9-7.
A two-run homer gave the Gulls a four-run lead in the seventh, and Salisbury added two more in the eighth before a Josh Clark (Brunswick, Maine) two-run home run capped the scoring in the top of the ninth.
Zac Johnson (Wakefield, R.I.) finished 3-for-4 with two runs scored and a stolen base, while Austin Martin (Wakefield, R.I.) was 2-for-3 with three RBI and two runs scored on a double and a home run.
Joe Atchue (Grafton, Mass.) struck out six in seven innings, allowing 11 earned runs on 12 hits.
