Champs! Men's Soccer Wins First TCCC Title on PK's Over Gordon, Headed to NCAA Tourney

Box Score DUDLEY, Mass. (Nov. 6) – The top-seeded Nichols College men's soccer team was crowned the 2010 The Commonwealth Coast Conference champion for the first time in program history Saturday afternoon after edging Gordon, 3-1 in penalty kicks. Through 110 minutes of play, the score was tied 1-1, and Nichols junior goalkeeper Brendan Hamilton (North Attleboro, Mass.) denied the Scots in the fourth round of penalty kicks to send the Bison to the NCAA Championships for the first time in program history.

Nichols' record moves to 15-3-3 in its historic season, while Gordon goes to 10-4-6.

The 2010 NCAA Division III Men's Soccer Championships selections announcement will be webstreamed live on www.NCAA.com Monday, November 8 at 2 p.m. Eastern time. Following the selection announcement, a news release and bracket will be posted on NCAA.com and nicholsathletics.com.

Gordon shot first in the penalty kicks, with Hamilton making the stop on Kellen Kasiguran's attempt. Bison back David Johnson (Canterbury, Conn.) put Nichols up by one before Hamilton stonewalled the Scots on their second attempt. Mark Capitanio (Mansfield, Mass.) converted for Nichols next to make it 2-0, but Archie Reed cut the lead in half to lead off the third round. Daniel Smith (Verona, N.J.) edged Nichols back ahead and Hamilton made the stop in the fourth round to clinch it.

Sophomore Scott Coderre (Thompson, Conn.) struck early for the Bison, giving the home team a 1-0 lead in the fifth minute. Senior Capitanio kept the ball inside the end line on the far side of the field and dribbled around a defender before chipping it into the box for Coderre to one-time it past Gordon keeper Alex Sosler at 4:06.

Nichols kept the Scots off the board for the rest of the half and maintained a 9-7 advantage in shots. Gordon forward Joel Spruance took a through ball past the Bison defense in the 18th minute, but Hamilton came out to scoop up the attempt. John Warren had a header ricochet off the crossbar in the 30th minute and Blake Berkey's rebound sailed above the net.

Gordon evened the score in the 74th minute when Matt Horth sent a shot from just outside the box through the entire Bison defense, tucking it inside the left post. Ben Partridge started the play by flicking the ball out to Horth to reset the offense.

The Scots had a chance to put the game away in the 85th minute after Hamilton came out to play a one-on-one situation at the near side of the box, but the ball came loose and crossed to the opposite side of the field. Andrew Vandervoort was there to fire at the open net, but Bison defender Stefan Nagy (Griswold, Conn.) was at the line to make a key stop and Eric Kelly (Dover Plains, N.Y.) cleared it out to send the game to extra time.

Gordon controlled play for the bulk of both overtimes, but Hamilton came up with four saves in the second overtime to force penalty kicks. He finished with five saves in the game, while Sosler stopped eight Bison shots.

Nichols held a slim advantage in shots a 21-19, while Gordon maintained a 6-5 lead in corner kicks.

For single-round sites, the first round of the NCAA Championships is scheduled for Thursday, November 11. For two-round sites, the first and second rounds are Saturday and Sunday, November 13-14.
