Box Score WENHAM, Mass. (Oct. 9) -- Matt Horth's goal in the 23rd minute was the only score of the match, as the Gordon men's soccer team picked up a 1-0 victory over Nichols before a large Homecoming Weekend crowd. Gordon's victory moved the team to 6-4-2 overall and 5-1-2 in league play. It was the first loss of the season for the Bison, as they fell to 8-2-1, and 6-1-1, in the conference.
The goal came off a header from the Gordon senior. Sophomore forward Eric Ernst served a ball into the middle of the box, and Horth leaped high to direct the ball on net from 10 yards out. Bison goalkeeper Brendan Hamilton (No. Attleboro, Mass.) made a leaping bid for the ball, but could not keep it out of the top of the net.
Gordon carried the play for much of the first half, outshooting the Bison 7-5 and holding a 4-2 lead in corners. Horth and Brandon Vanderveen both challenged later on in the half, but were unable to connect.
In the second half, the Bison came out strong and began to pressure the Scots' defense. Brendan Whitson (Auburn, Mass.) nearly scored in the 50th minute, but his shot from close range went just wide.
Nichols had an outstanding opportunity in the 80th minute when Scott Coderre (Thompson, Conn.) broke free of the left wing, but his challenge was parried by a diving save from Gordon goalkeeper Alex Sosler. Sosler posted 4 saves in the shutout, his second shutout of the week.
The game turned particularly physical in the second half. 28 fouls were called in the match along with 4 yellow cards.
The Scots will play Colby-Sawyer on Tuesday at 7 p.m. Nichols hosts Daniel Webster in a non-conference matchup on Tuesday.
