Box Score QUINCY, Mass. (Oct. 2) -- Nichols College rode three second half goals in route to a 3-1 win over The Commonwealth Coast Conference host Eastern Nazarene College Saturday afternoon at Veteran's Memorial Stadium.
The first half was dominated by defense as neither team was able to find the net. Both keepers held strong and sent the match into halftime scoreless.
The second half started out to be much of the same until Nichols' Starleena Cash (Springfield, Mass.) took a pass from teammate Samantha Abro (Northborough, Mass.) beat a defender and stuck a shot into the top corner of the net to put the Bison up 1-0. Abro was again part of the action in the 75th minute as she tapped in a cross from teammate Kaitlyn DiBuono (Auburn, Mass.) to give Nichols a 2-nil lead.
Just before the 82 minute mark, Cash struck again as this time creating her own breakaway and beat the keeper to stretch the Nichols lead to 3-0. Sara Allen provided the lone goal for Eastern Nazarene as she took a cross in the box and tapped the ball into the net to pull the Lions within two with just a minute remaining. Allen's goal would not be enough to spark late match heroics as Nichols held on for the 3-1 victory.
Cash's two goals brings her season total to 8 while Abro's goal was her team leading 9th of the season.
Nichols' Chelsea Shaughnessy (Halifax, Mass.) led all players with 5 shots and 3 on goal. Sophomore Maureen Lynch (Holden, Mass.) made three saves in the win.
The win brings Nichols' TCCC record to 3-3 and their season record to 8-3. The loss drops the Lions to 2-6-2 on the season and 0-5-1 in TCCC play.
Eastern Nazarene will be back in action on Tuesday as they travel to TCCC opponent Western New England for a 3:30 p.m. match. Nichols will host TCCC foe Roger Williams on Tuesday at 7 p.m.
