Box Score DUDLEY, Mass. (Oct. 17) – Junior Chelsea Shaughnessy (Halifax, Mass.) scored what proved to be the game-winner in the 17th minute to lead the Nichols College women's soccer team to a 1-0 The Commonwealth Coast Conference victory over visiting Colby-Sawyer College Sunday afternoon on Vendetti Field. Nichols improves to 10-4-1 overall and 5-4-1 in TCCC games. Colby-Sawyer falls to 4-10-2 overall and 3-6-1 in TCCC action.
Shaughnessy came charging in to head in a corner served up by Holly Ventura (Hudson, Mass.) in the 17th minute to give Nichols a 1-0 lead.
Colby-Sawyer had a pair of corner opportunities late in the half, with a good rebound chance after the first, but Sara Lavalle's shot sailed just wide with 5:30 remaining in the stanza.
The Chargers carried the momentum into the second half but were unable to convert before Nichols started to swing the game's energy in its favor about 15 minutes into the frame.
Nichols peppered the Chargers 15 shots in the second half, but were stymied by the crossbar on three occasions and were stopped six more times by sophomore keeper Shalyn Spencer. She finished the game with seven saves.
Nichols sophomore goalkeeper Maureen Lynch (Holbrook, Mass.) made three saves in her fourth shutout win of the season.
Nichols is back in action Tuesday in a 4 p.m. TCCC game at Wentworth. Colby-Sawyer travels to New England College Tuesday for a 3:30 p.m. conference matchup.
