DUDLEY, Mass. (Oct. 12) – The top-seeded Nichols College women's tennis team defeated eighth-seeded Gordon College, 5-0, Tuesday afternoon at the Francis W. Robinson Courts to advance to the The Commonwealth Coast Conference semifinals for the second year in a row. Career doubles victories record holder Maria Balabanova (Moscow, Russia) and first year Anna Dyakiv (Amsterdam, N.Y.) tied the program's single-season doubles wins record with their 12th win on the year.
The duo improved to 12-0 on the season with a quick 8-0 win at the second doubles flight, while Jillian McQuiggan (Weymouth, Mass.) and Chelsey Miller (Salem, Conn.) followed with an 8-4 top flight victory. Alex Cifone (Bristol, Conn.) and Meg Woodruff (Morris, Conn.) put the home team up by three with an 8-2 win at the third flight.
Balabanova was the first to finish on the singles side, posting a 6-0, 6-0 win over Jessica Greenwood at the fourth flight. Dyakiv clinched the match with a 6-0, 6-1 victory at the top flight over Katherine Stephens.
Nichols (13-1) travels to Assumption Thursday for a 3 p.m. non-conference match before hosting #5 Colby-Sawyer on Wednesday, October 20th at 2 p.m. for the TCCC Semifinals. Gordon (4-10) hosts Salem State in its season finale Thursday at 3:30 p.m.
