Late Goal Lifts Men's Soccer Past Daniel Webster, 1-0

Box Score

DUDLEY, Mass. (Oct. 12) – First year Brendan Whitson (Auburn, Mass.) broke a scoreless tie with 35 seconds remaining in the game to lift the Nichols College men's soccer team to a 1-0 non-conference victory over visiting Daniel Webster College on Michael J. Vendetti Field Tuesday evening. The Bison improve to 9-2-1 overall, while the Eagles dip to 4-5-1.

Senior Mark Capitanio (Mansfield, Mass.) served up a lofting ball from the near sideline about 45 yards out, bending it out toward the back post where Whitson deflected the ball past Daniel Webster junior keeper Joe Keene for the game-winning score.

Just prior to the marker, the Eagles had threatened with three consecutive shots, the first sailing just wide before testing Bison junior keeper Brendan Hamilton (North Attleboro, Mass.) twice.

Nichols controlled play for much of the game, peppering Keene with 13 shots amidst a 25-11 shot advantage in the game. The Bison also claimed a 12-1 lead in corner kicks. The Nichols back line, led by senior Ryan Wytrych (Feeding Hills, Mass.) and juniors David Johnson (Canterbury, Conn.) and Eric Kelly (Dover Plains, N.Y.), limited the Eagles to just three shots on net, all coming in the final 20 minutes of the second stanza.

The Bison return to The Commonwealth Coast Conference action on Thursday in a 3:30 p.m. home game against Regis. The Eagles host Rivier Thursday at 3:30 p.m.
