Box Score DUDLEY, Mass. (Sept. 7)– Nichols College junior Mark Capitanio (Mansfield, Mass.) scored a goal and assisted on the game-winner in the Bison's 2-0 season-opening victory over Albertus Magnus College Monday evening at Vendetti Field. The Bison open the season with a win for the third time in the last four seasons; the Falcons even up at 1-1-1 on the season.
Capitanio played a ball up the left side into the box for first year Tim Howard (Paxton, Mass.), who followed through with a shot just inside the left post to give the Bison the lead in the 29th minute. The goal marked the first of Howard's career.
Capitanio then delivered the insurance goal in the 89th minute after an Albertus Magnus foul awarded the Bison a direct kick. His shot lasered through the Falcon's wall and past Albertus Magnus keeper Gerald O'Connor (Hamden, Conn.) for the 2-0 final.
O'Connor finished with three saves in the game, while Nichols sophomore netminder Brendan Hamilton (No. Attleboro, Mass.) stopped three shots, with the Bison defense accounting for three more saves, including a pair from sophomore David Johnson (Canterbury, Conn.).
Sophomore midfielder Ian Gaither (Meriden, Conn.) led the Falcons' offense with four shots, two of which were on net.
Nichols held an overall shot advantage at 14-12, and a 6-4 lead in corner kicks.
The Bison are back in action on Thursday when Nichols travels to Daniel Webster for a 3:30 p.m. game. Albertus Magnus opens GNAC play Saturday in a 1 p.m. game at Emmanuel.
