MILTON, Mass. (Sept. 5) – Senior Molly McGuire (E. Sandwich, Mass.) tied the program's career singles victories record with her 43rd career win Saturday as the Bison opened The Commonwealth Coast Conference play with a 9-0 victory at Curry College. Nichols improves to 3-0 on the season, while the Colonels dropped their season opener.
McGuire, who matched her own single-season singles wins record of 14 wins in 2008, came into the year needing just two wins to match the career mark set by Jessica Porter (Melrose, Mass.). McGuire defeated Allison Weisenbach, 6-1, 6-0 this afternoon.
She also teamed up with first-year Jillian McQuiggan (Weymouth, Mass.) for an 8-0 victory in the top doubles spot. In the top singles flight, McQuiggan was a 6-1, 6-1 winner over Lauren Maloney.
First-year Alexandra Cifone (Bristol, Conn.) and sophomore Chelsey Miller (Salem, Conn.) were 8-2 victors at No. 2 doubles; Cifone picked up a 6-0, 6-1 win at third singles, and Miller was a 6-0, 6-1 winner at No. 5 singles.
Maria Balabanova (Moscow, Russia) and Megan Woodruff (Morris, Conn.) won, 8-1, in the third doubles flight; Balabanova won her first set at No. 4 singles easily at 6-0 before winning the second, 7-5. Woodruff wasted no time in a 6-1, 6-0 win at sixth singles.
The Bison (3-0, 1-0) return to action Tuesday at home against Endicott in a 3:30 p.m. TCCC match.
