SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (Sept. 22) - The Nichols College women's tennis team kept its perfect season going with a 6-3 victory over Western New England College Tuesday afternoon. The Bison improved to 9-0 overall and 6-0 in The Commonwealth Coast Conference (TCCC) while the Golden Bears slip to 5-2 and 4-2.
Freshman Jillian McQuiggan (Weymouth, Mass.) led the visitors with a win at No. 1 singles and No. 1 doubles with senior Molly McGuire (East Sandwich, Mass.).
Freshmen Alexandra Cifone (Bristol, Conn.) and Megan Woodruff (Morris, Conn.) each remained undefeated in singles play with victories at the No. 3 and No. 6 positions.
Western New England College won a pair of singles matches in tie-breakers with senior Kelly Murnane taking the No. 4 flight and sophomore Christina Barbarisi the No. 5 singles match.
Barbarisi and freshman Linda Mustafa also posted a win at No. 3 doubles for the Golden Bears, dealing Woodruff and Maria Balabanova (Moscow, Russia) their first loss of the season.
Nichols will try to tie the program's single-season wins record (10) in a 4 p.m. match at Worcester State on Thursday afternoon.
