Box Score DUDLEY, Mass. (Sept. 10) - Seniors Kelsey Boothby and Karla Ellis each scored two goals to help the UMass Dartmouth women's soccer team defeat Nichols College 6-3 Thursday afternoon on Nichols' grass field. Win the victory, the Corsairs even their record at 2-2, while Nichols falls to 1-2 on the season.
The game was a defensive battle for the first 25 minutes, until Ellis opened it up by scoring two consecutive goals in three minutes, both off assists from junior Allison Carver. Boothby then followed by netting a free kick from 25 yards out, placing it over the Bison's goalie. Nichols scored their first goal on a breakaway shot that deflected off the UMass goalie right to freshman Samantha Abro (Northborough, Mass.) who put it in. The Corsairs would put up one more goal before the close of the half, scored by junior Crystal Peixoto to make it 4-1 at the break.
Nichols opened up the second half with a goal by sophomore Maryanne Lanzoni (Wilbraham, Mass.), and assist from sophomore Kaitlyn DiBuono (Auburn, Mass.), cutting the Corsairs' lead in half. DiBuono had two assists on the day. UMass answered by adding two more goals, one from freshman Jamie Ledin and another from Boothby. Nichols would score once more off a corner kick to Abro, but could not get any closer.
Junior goalkeeper Tanya Braga made six saves in the win for the Corsairs. Maureen Lynch (Holbrook, Mass.) made five saves in the losing effort for the Bison.
The Bison are back in action on Saturday in a 2 p.m. game against Gordon College, hosting the Scots at Vendetti Field. The Corsairs host Smith Saturday at 1 p.m.
