Curry Takes TCCC Doubleheader From Baseball

DUDLEY, Mass. --  The Curry College baseball team defeated Nichols College in a The Commonwealth Coast Conference doubleheader in Milton, Mass., Wednesday afternoon. Nichols was the home team in the relocated games due to unplayable field conditions, and fell to the Colonels, 10-2 and 11-3. Curry improves to 17-3 overall and sits atop the TCCC with an 11-1 record. Nichols dips to 7-10 overall and 2-6 in conference play.

 

Toni Luciani went 3-4 with a triple and four RBI to lead the Colonels in game one. Suffering the loss for Nichols was sophomore starter Scott Leecock (Palmer, Mass.) as he allowed nine runs (eight earned) on eight hits while striking out five in five innings. Junior Cory Moore earned the win, improving to 4-0, as he pitched six innings and gave up only one earned run while scattering seven hits and striking out four.

 

Curry struck first in the top of the second on a two-run rally, as they scored three runs on two singles and a fielder's choice putting them up 3-0. With a run in the third and two in the fourth, Curry took the lead 6-0. In the top of the fourth Curry's first run came on a bases-loaded balk, and the second came on an RBI single to left field by Luciani, who would be left on base. Through five innings the score held 6-0.

 

In the sixth the bases were loaded with no outs when Luciani came through again, this time with a three-run triple. Luciani would then score on a sac fly to left field by senior James Geosits.

 

Nichols finally broke through with a run in the bottom of the sixth when sophomore left fielder George Sergi (Blackstone, Mass.) hit a solo home run with two outs. In the bottom of the seventh Nichols managed one more run in their comeback attempt as sophomore catcher Patrick Coakley (Charlton, Mass.) singled to left to bring in sophomore Mathew Whitman (North Plainfield, N.J.).

 

Leading the way for Nichols was Sergi who went 3-for-3 with the home run in the sixth.

 

In relief for Nichols was sophomore Christopher Nemeskal (Swampscott, Mass.) who went two innings on the hill, giving up one earned run.

 

In game two it was more of the same story as the Colonels put up 11 runs on 12 hits to defeat Nichols 11-3. Curry had a variety of players contribute offensively as six players reached base at least twice and four had at least two hits.

 

On the mound for Curry was junior James Page who went six strong innings giving up only one hit and one unearned run, while earning the win. The loss went to the starting pitcher for the Bison, sophomore JC LeBarron (Bennington, Vt.), who allowed eight runs (six earned) on 10 hits while fanning two in four innings.

 

Nichols went on the board first in the game as they scored in the bottom of the first when sophomore Zachary Johnson (Wakefield, R.I.) scored on a groundout to third by junior Al Montalto (Wilmington, Mass.).

 

Curry came right back with two runs in the top of the second. Junior Jesse Bruinsma doubled to left to bring in two runs to put Curry on top 2-1. Nichols was held scoreless until the bottom of the seventh and Curry would score another two runs in the third and three more in the fourth to hold a 5-1 lead.

 

In the seventh Curry put the game out of reach as they put up three more runs. Sophomore Carlos Cornejo recorded two RBI on a single to center.

 

Nichols in the bottom of the seventh scored two runs on two errors to make the final score 11-3.

 

Curry had Bruinsma, Cornejo, and junior Tim Sweeney each with two hits, and senior third baseman Ralph Renzulli  picked up three hits and an RBI. Senior pitcher Jim Fritz (Souderton, Pa.) pitched two solid innings for the Bison, striking out two on one hit and no runs.

 

Nichols is back in action Thursday at Westfield State at 3:30pm. Curry travels to Endicott in doubleheader starting at noon on Saturday.
