Box Score WORCESTER, Mass. == Clark University broke open a one-goal game by outscoring Nichols College 7-3 over the final two periods on the way to a 13-8 victory over the Bison in a non-conference men's lacrosse game played on Thursday at Granger Field.
Clark (1-6) halted a six-game losing skid to post its first win of the season. Nichols (2-2) dropped its second straight game.
Leading 6-5 after two quarters, Clark went up 7-5 just 3:39 into the third on the second of Phil Winslow's three goals. Sophomore Garrett Hill (Braintree, Mass.) scored a goal to bring the Bison within one (7-6) at the 6:37 mark.
It was all Clark from there. The Cougars scored four unanswered goals to take an 11-6 lead at 10:21 of the fourth period. Senior Shawn Roche, who finished with four assists, had a goal and two helpers during the surge.
Nichols netted a pair of goals within a 23 second span to close the gap to 11-8, but a couple of goals by Eugene Arsenault pushed Clark's lead back up to 13-8 to secure the five goal victory.
Arsenault finished with four goals for Clark, while Roche and Winslow tallied three goals apiece. Sophomore Danny Heelan also chipped in with a pair of goals.
Sophomore Timothy Ahern (Boca Raton, Fla.) led Nichols with three goals and an assist.
Clark held a slim 29-28 advantage in shots, but Nichols got the edge in groundballs, 42-36.
Senior Tyler Campbell (Portland, Ore.) stopped eight shots in goal for the Cougars, while sophomore Austin Healy (Westford, Mass.) made eight saves for Nichols.
Both teams will be back in action on Saturday. Clark will host Norwich University at 7 p.m., while Nichols will travel to Wentworth Institute of Technology for a 4 p.m. tilt.
