Box Score CASTLETON, Vt. (Oct. 21) - Castleton State College received four goals from four different players in a 4-2 win over Nichols College in non-conference field hockey action Wednesday evening at Spartan Stadium. With the win, Castleton improves to 6-9 overall, while Nichols falls to 13-3 after opening the season with 13-straight wins.
After a scoreless first half, Eileen Clinton (Londonderry, N.H.) put Nichols on the board 4:19 into the second frame. Mary Kate Frodema (Springfield, Mass.) passed the ball from left to right into the circle and Clinton was able to stuff it past the diving Siobhan Whittemore. Just 20 seconds prior, Whittemore had turned away an attempt by Chelsea Correia (Seekonk, Mass.) with a dive in front of an open cage.
Molly Fraher scored the first of three unanswered goals for the Spartans five minutes later. Fraher hauled in a pass at the top of the circle from Heather Brock, took one touch and blasted a shot past Nichols goalie Krista-Jean Forand (Plymouth, Mass.).
Sarah Flore scored five minutes after that, making a nifty move past a Bison defender and beating Forand high. Stephanie Paproski ended the scoring run with her fifth goal of the season, converting a Jessica Scott assist.
Nichols cut the lead to 3-2 with 5:20 remaining in the game as Barbara Roy (Springfield, Mass.) tallied her fifth of the season off another Frodema assist. The goal, very similar to the first Bison marker, came after a flurry of action in front of the cage that included three shots and three penalty corners. Clinton unleashed a shot that was turned away on a defensive save from Jenna Charbonneau.
Nichols continued to press after a Castleton timeout, but a pair of Whittemore saves and another defensive save from Charbonneau extinguished the threat and put Castleton on the counter-attack.
Courtney Nolan rifled a shot that Forand turned away, but Kealy Chipman pounced on the rebound and stuffed it home for her seventh goal of the season and the final insurance tally.
Whittemore ended the game with eight saves, while Forand turned away two. Forand also snuffed out a pair of dangerous crossing passes and kicked them out of harm's way to keep the game scoreless in the first half.
Nichols travels to Gordon College Saturday for a pivotal match-up in The Commonwealth Coast Conference (TCCC) at 1:00 pm. Nichols currently sits tied atop the TCCC standings with Endicott at 6-1, but holds the tie-breaker by virtue of a head-to-head win.
