Box Score DUDLEY, Mass. – Led by first-year midfielder Maria DiTommaso's (Rindge, N.H.) first career hat trick, the Nichols College women's soccer team defeated Newbury College, 10-0, Monday afternoon at Vendetti Field. Holly Ventura (Hudson, Mass.) scored a pair of goals, the first of her career, and Kaitlyn DiBuono (Auburn, Mass.) picked up three assists.
Nichols (3-3) led 4-0 at the half, capped by the pair from Ventura, both set up by DiBuono, in the 32nd and 35th minutes. DiBuono served up a cross from the right side that Ventura headed in at the back post, and the next was set up the same way, except Ventura got a high foot on it.
DiTommaso put Nichols on the board just over 14 minutes into the game after burying the rebound off her own point-blank shot that Newbury netminder Anastasia Tridenti (Gloucester, R.I.) stopped just inside the right corner of the box. Chelsea Blair (Blandford, Mass.) followed with a similar play in the 21st minute from the middle of the field, sending her shot high over Tridenti.
The Bison added six in the second frame, starting with Jessica Ferris' (Springfield, Mass.) first career tally in the 49th minute, a long kick from 30 yards out on the right.
Newbury's best chance of the game came in the in the 52nd minute when Ashley Greene-Allen (Brockton, Mass.) sent a cross from the right side to leading scorer Jessica Graus (Rochester, N.Y.), who got a head on it, but sent it just wide to the left of the net.
Kaila Gray (Pembroke, N.H.) fed Chelsea Shaughnessy (Halifax, Mass.) with a pass in front of Tridenti in the 54th minute that Shaughnessy chipped over the netminder who came out to play Gray.
Melissa Mendall (Quincy, Mass.) fed Kensey Marsland (Ware, Mass.) in the 61st for her first goal of the season before DiTommaso put the Bison up, 9-0 with her pair.
Katelyn Delaney (Weymouth, Mass.) capped the scoring with her first of the year from DiBuono.
Sarah Levesque (Ludlow, Mass.) played the first 56 minutes in net for Nichols before giving way to Nichole Johnson (Westhampton, Mass.). Tridenti made 12 saves for the Nighthawks.
Nichols is back in action on Tuesday when the Bison host Western New England College in a 7 p.m. TCCC game at Vendetti Field. Newbury (0-6) plays at WPI in a 7 p.m. game Thursday.
