DUDLEY, Mass. – The Colby-Sawyer women's tennis team edged Nichols, 5-4, Thursday to hand the Bison their first defeat of the season. The Chargers took two close matches at second and third doubles and Brittany Mailman (Freedom, N.H.) won at No. 4 singles to seal The Commonwealth Coast Conference victory. Molly McGuire (East Sandwich, Mass.) led Nichols, improving to 5-0 at No. 2 singles with a 6-3, 6-3 win.
Mailman battled it out with Maria Balabanova (Moscow, Russia) at fourth singles, winning 7-5, 6-4, to keep the Chargers perfect in TCCC play this season (2-0).
Nichols College's Jessica Porter (Melrose, Mass.) and first-year Chelsey Miller (Salem, Conn.) posted an 8-5 win over Hannah White (Stockbridge, Mass.) and Carolyn Drake (Great River, N.Y.) in the top doubles spot, but Mailman and Mary Francis (North Steuben, Maine) handed McGuire and Balabanova the pair's first loss of the season at No. 2 doubles, 9-7. At third doubles, Lauren Turenne (Reading, Mass.) and Nikki Humphrey (Little Compton, R.I.) pulled out a 9-7 win over the Bison's Emily Levine (Providence, R.I.) and Brittany Pope (North Attleboro, Mass.).
Francis defeated Porter at the top singles spot, 6-1, 6-4, for the Nichols senior's first loss in seven matches, but McGuire topped White in the second spot to remain unbeaten on the season. Turenne won over Miller at No. 3 singles, 6-1, 6-2, but Nichols took the fifth and sixth singles matches.
Kelsey Urbanetti (Glastonbury, Conn.) defeated Drake at No. 5 singles, 6-4, 6-3, to improve to 5-0 on the season, while Levine picked up her first TCCC win, defeating Humphrey in the sixth spot, 6-3, 6-1.
Nichols is back in action at home on Saturday hosting Regis in conference action at noon. Colby-Sawyer travels to Salve Regina Saturday for a 1 p.m. conference match.
