Box Score The Nichols College hockey team got a pair of third period goals in a 14-second span as the Bison rallied to score three unanswered goals and defeat Wentworth, 3-2, in the championship game of the 2008 Becker College Ice Breaker Tournament played at the New England Sports Center.
Wentworth, which had scored six straight goals to advance to the finals with a 6-1 win over Becker Friday night, wasted little time getting on the board as junior forward Jeff Olitch (Calgary, Alberta) fed freshman Skylur Jameson (Long Beach, Calif.), who netted his first career goal at 2:03. The game remained 1-0 in favor of Wentworth until the 14:44 mark when sophomore Geric Brodt (Anchorage, Alaska) and freshman Casey Shade (Anchorage, Alaska) assisted on sophomore defenseman Jeff Fedyk's (Calgary, Alberta) power play goal. Despite holding a 2-0 lead, the Leopards were outshot, 10-6.
The Bison evened the game late in middle stanza on a 4x4 goal from sophomore forward Will Munson (Corona, Calif.), which was assisted by senior forward Anthony Monte (Chicago, Ill.) and classmate Cole Ruwe (Pekin, Ill.). Nichols continued to outshoot Wentworth in the second period with an 11-6 margin, increasing the total to 21-12 for the game.
Ruwe tied the game at 2-all with a power play goal at 16:35, which was assisted by Monte and freshman forward Andrew Elia (Schomberg, Ill.). Ruwe factored into the game-winning goal just 14 seconds later when he and classmate Ryan Gervais (Chicago, Ill.) found Eric Cremer (Chelsea, Mich.) for his first tally of the season.
With 41 seconds remaining, Wentworth called its timeout to pull the goalie for an extra attacker. However, Nichols fended off a late Leopard charge and held on for the win.
Senior goalie Keith Fink (Easton, Md.) made 18 saves for the Bison, while junior Justin Marriott (St. Clair Shores, Mich.) turned aside 34 shots for Wentworth. Nichols held a 37-20 shot advantage for the game.
Nichols improves to 2-0 and hosts Franklin Pierce on Wednesday at 7:00 p.m. Wentworth falls to 1-1 and has both its ECAC Northeast and home opener against Worcester State on Tuesday at 3:15 p.m.
