Wentworth Edges Men's Soccer, 2-1

Box Score

BOSTON, Mass. – Senior forward Matt Martins knocked in the service of a corner kick with 12:52 in regulation as the Wentworth men's soccer team edged Nichols, 2-1, in a The Commonwealth Coast Conference contest played at Sweeney Field.

Wentworth had a golden opportunity to take an early 1-0 lead, however a shot from senior midfielder Kyle Nasman rattled off the crossbar and was cleared by the Bison defense. The remainder of the half would be a defensive battle and saw the Leopards hold a 7-6 advantage in shots after 45:00.

The hosts made the most of their first possession of the second half as freshman David Lagarce  took a feed from senior Ben Hamlin and put a shot to the upper left corner of the net just 12 ticks into the second half. The lead would remain in Wentworth's favor until Bison junior midfielder Timothy Mann (Marshfield, Mass.) rifled a shot from 25 yards out that found the upper right corner and knotted the game at one-all.

Senior midfielder Geoff Hackett took a corner kick from the right-side mark and served it low to Martins, who was able to get a foot on it and push his shot attempt inside the right post, giving the Leopards a 2-1 lead they would not relinquish at 77:08.

Sophomore Brian Pearsall remained unbeaten on the year (4-0), making a pair of first half saves for Wentworth.  Junior Clayton Johnson (Williamstown, Mass.) made seven saves for Nichols. The Leopards outshot the Bison 19-10, including 12-4 in the second frame.

With the win Wentworth improves to 4-8-1 overall and 3-4-0 in TCCC play.  Nichols falls to 4-7-1 (1-5-1).  Both teams are back in action on Saturday.  The Leopards travel to the University of New England for a 3:00 match against the Nor'Easters, while the Bison host New England College at 1:00 p.m.
