Box Score

DUDLEY, Mass.— Senior Dan Saccoccio (Holtsville, N.Y.) scored twice, including the game- winning goal in the second overtime to lift the Roger Williams men's soccer team to a 2-1 win over Nichols College in The Commonwealth Coast Conference men's soccer action Saturday afternoon during the Bison's homecoming weekend.

With seven minutes to go in the second overtime period, the Hawks received a free kick from 23 yards out. Soccoccia's shot glanced off the left post and past diving Nichols goalkeeper Brendan Hamilton (North Attleboro, Mass.).

Nichols scored first in this one, when first-year player David Johnson (Canterbury Conn.)  put in a cross from sophomore Mark Capitanio (Mansfield, Mass.) that deflected off the Hawks' goalie right to his feet, early in the second half.

Roger Williams kept the pressure strong in the second half, tying the score 10 minutes after the Bison took the lead. Soccoccia scored his first goal on a pass back from sophomore Michael Patriarca (Warren, R.I.) who set him up for a shot in the lower right corner past Nichols goalie Clayton Johnson (Williamstown, Mass.).

Nichols almost took the lead late in the second half, when Capitanio's header off a corner kick was saved by Hawks' goalie, Peter Plate (Commack, N.Y.).

Both teams buckled down on defense for the remainder of the second half, and throughout the first overtime period, keeping the score tied at one.

Plate played the entire game, recording six saves in the win. Johnson played the first two periods and recorded five saves. He was replaced by Hamilton in the first overtime period; he had one save.

The Hawks improve their record to 6-2-1, and 5-1-1 in conference play this season. Nichols falls to 4-6-1, with a 1-3-1 conference record.

Next, Nichols plays at Wentworth at 4 p.m. on October 7. Roger Williams hosts Wheaton on Monday, October 6.
