WENHAM, Mass. – The Nichols College women's tennis team defeated Gordon, 7-2, Friday afternoon to improve to 8-3 overall and 5-2 in The Commonwealth Coast Conference play. The Bison held a 2-1 lead after doubles competition and clinched the match with Chelsey Miller's (Salem, Conn.) 6-0, 6-0 win over Andrea Metayer at No. 3 singles.
Miller teamed up with Jessica Porter (Melrose, Mass.) for an 8-6 win over Kate Kirby and Kristin Bollier at No. 1 doubles to improve to 7-0 in league play, while Molly McGuire (East Sandwich, Mass.) and Maria Balabanova (Moscow, Russia) cruised to an 8-1 win over Maggie Baldridge and Heather Vicary at second doubles. Monica Bassi (Branford, Conn.) and Jessica Burdick (Clinton, Mass.) were edged at No. 3 doubles, 8-3, by Laura Baldwin and Rebekah Gibbons .
In singles competition, Porter dropped her first set at No. 1 singles, 1-6, but rallied to take the second, 6-4, before falling, 10-2, in the super tiebreak to Kirby. At No. 2 singles, McGuire was victorious with a 6-4, 6-3 win over Bollier, improving to 9-2 on the season.
Balabanova defeated Baldrige at fourth singles, 6-2, 6-4, and Kelsey Urbanetti (Glastonbury, Conn.) put forth an outstanding performance at fifth singles with a 6-1, 6-3 win over Jessica Greenwood. Deirdre Watkins (Hubbardston, Mass.) was victorious at No. 6 singles over Lauren Stone, 6-1, 6-0.
Nichols continues its busy week with an 11 a.m. non-conference game against Worcester State Saturday as part of homecoming. The team will honor its two seniors – Porter and Watkins – after the match.
