Box Score NEWPORT, R.I. – Alex Clark scored off his own rebound on a penalty kick midway through the second half to lift the Salve Regina University men's soccer team to a 1-0 win over Nichols College in The Commonwealth Coast Conference action Wednesday afternoon at Brother Reynolds Field.
After sophomore Sean McCallister was fouled in the box, Seahawk head coach Craig O'Rourke II selected Clark, a graduate student, to take the penalty kick. Clark's initial shot was targeted for the lower left corner, but Bison freshman goalkeeper Brendan Hamilton (No. Attleboro, Mass.) dove to his right and knocked the shot down. Clark stepped in, collected the rebound, and fired a shot into the far right side of the net at 68:17. The goal was Clark's fifth of the season.
Seahawk junior goalkeeper Kurt Ginthwain did the rest, finishing the afternoon with 10 saves as the Seahawks were outshot 30-10 on the afternoon. The best save for the Seahawks, however, came from graduate student George Sarlanis In the final minute of the second half and with Ginthwain out of position, Bison sophomore Michael Schell (Guilford, Conn.) cranked a shot that was kicked away by Sarlanis. Sophomore Matthew Nash (Blandford, Mass.) fired the rebound high, negating one of several quality scoring chances for the Bison on the afternoon.
Following a foul on the Seahawks with nine seconds remaining, Hamilton placed a free kick from midfield into the box, where Schnell's header was grabbed by Ginthwain with four ticks left on the clock.
Hamilton made nine saves for the Bison, who held a 7-1 edge in corner kicks. They held a 17-1 edge in shots after 45 minutes of action with the wind at their backs, but that gap was closed to 13-9 shooting against the wind in the second half. Sophomore Mark Capitanio (Hudson, Mass.) had two solid scoring chances for the Bison in the first half, including a free kick just a few steps in from midfield that Ginthwain was able to deflect over the net.
Nichols (7-8-1, 4-6-1 TCCC) hosts Colby-Sawyer Saturday at 2 p.m. for Senior Day.
