Women's Soccer Doubles Up Salve Regina, 4-2

NEWPORT, R.I. – Sophomore Katelyn Delaney (Weymouth, Mass.) recorded a goal and an assist to lead Nichols College to a 4-2 win over Salve Regina University in The Commonwealth Coast Conference women's soccer action Tuesday afternoon at Brother Reynolds Field.

 

Senior Kaila Gray (Pembroke, N.H.), first-year player Chelsea Shaughnessy (Halifax, Mass.), and senior Chelsea Blair (Blandford, Mass.) also scored for the Bison, who improved to 8-7-1 (4-6-1 TCCC) on the season. The loss drops the Seahawks to 4-12 (3-7 TCCC) and officially eliminates them from postseason contention.

 

The Seahawks jumped out to a 1-0 lead at 8:37 when senior Samantha Sandland headed home a corner kick from senior Ryan Murphy for her second goal of the season. The Bison answered with two goals in 42 seconds to take a 2-1 lead. Gray took a pass from freshman Kaitlyn DiBuono (Auburn, Mass.) and netted her sixth goal of the season at 23:10, and Delaney headed home a corner kick from sophomore Nicole Johnson (Westhampton, Mass.) at 23:52. The goal was Delaney's third of the season. Nichols extended its lead to 3-1 at 37:40 when Shaugnessy headed home a lob pass into the box by Delaney.

 

In the second half, Salve Regina sophomore Kendra Andrie tallied her third goal of the season at 60:02, firing a turn-around shot off a pass from junior Jen Duval to bring the Seahawks to within a goal at 3-2. The Bison regained a two-goal lead at 4-2 and capped the scoring at 65:49 when Blair knocked home a rebound for her fifth goal of the season.

 

Senior Sarah Levesque (Ludlow, Mass.) made two saves to earn her eighth win of the season for Nichols. Junior Katie Vaudrain stopped eight shots, including a leaping save on Johnson in the second half which kept the Seahawks within striking distance.

 

The Bison outshot the Seahawks, 22-12, and held a 7-4 edge in corner kicks.

 

Nichols returns home to host Colby-Sawyer on Saturday at noon.
