Box Score DUDLEY, Mass. -- The Nichols College women's soccer team defeated the visiting New England College Pilgrims, 4-0, at Vendetti Field Saturday afternoon in a The Commonwealth Coast Conference game. Sophomore Katelyn Delaney (Weymouth, Mass.) scored the game winning goal in the first half as she took the shot from the center of the box and put it in the right side of the goal. With the victory Nichols improves to 7-6-0 and 3-5-0 in the TCCC and the Pilgrims drop to 4-6-1 and 3-3-1 in the TCCC.
The Pilgrims nearly struck for a goal early in the first half as senior captain Debbie Lyons (Wilmington, Mass) found herself on a breakaway with only the goalkeeper to beat, but her shot went high and the score remained 0-0.
In the second half Nichols cushioned their lead by adding three more goals. Senior Kaila Gray (Pembroke, N.H.) received a pass in front of the net from first year midfielder Chelsea Shaughnessy (Halifax, Mass.) and flicked it pass the Pilgrims goalkeeper in the 63rd minute. With 24:12 on the clock Shaughnessy was able to put in a goal herself when she received a similar pass from sophomore Holly Ventura (Hudson, Mass.). The final goal came from first year defender Laurel Houle (Brooklyn, Conn.) with an assist from junior Lindsey Barbo (Natick, Mass.).
New England College junior goalkeeper Kerry Hughes (Wallkill, N.Y.) finished the game with nine saves and Nichols senior goalkeeper Sarah Levesque (Ludlow, Mass.) picked up the victory with four saves.
Nichols next hosts Endicott on Wednesday in a 4 p.m. TCCC game, while New England hosts Colby-Sawyer Monday at 4 p.m.
