Garvin McAlister begins his second season as an assistant men’s basketball coach at Nichols in 2016-17.
In his first season at Nichols in 2015-16, the Bison won a program-record 25 games, captured the Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) Regular Season Championship for the third-straight season, and won their first-ever Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Division III New England Region Championship.
McAlister spent the 2014-15 campaign as an assistant coach with the women’s basketball program at Western Connecticut State, when he assisted with practices and scouting programs while helping the head coach develop practice plans to improve player development. McAlister was a key recruiter for WCSU as he was a staple at high school and AAU tournaments. He also coordinated all aspects of team travel.
McAlister was also the head boys basketball coach of the DREAM Elite Hornets 15U team last season, where his duties ranged from player evaluation and development of practice plans to managing all aspects of team travel and the purchase and distribution of equipment.
McAlister spent one year as the assistant boys basketball coach at St. Bernard’s High School in Connecticut (2012-13) before accepting a similar position at Norwich Free Academy the following year. He also served as the head coach of the boy’s freshmen team at Norwich.
A four-year member of the Post University men’s basketball program (2007-11), McAlister helped the Eagles post a pair of 17-win seasons (2008-09; 2010-11). He finished his playing career at Post with 700+ points, 300+ rebounds, 300+ assists, and 100+ steals. McAlister – a Norwich, Conn. native – was named Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) Player of the Week on February 20, 2011.
