Joe Assenza ’19 begins his second season as assistant baseball coach and head coach of the junior varsity baseball team at Nichols College in 2021.
The Bison were off to a scorching 8-2 start in 2020, highlighted by a doubleheader sweep of Bates and a season-ending win over Keene State. Nichols – which was a perfect 4-0 at the Russmatt Invitational in Florida – was the last Division III school in the country to play (and win) a game before the season was stopped due to COVID-19. The Bison recorded 10+ hits in seven of their 10 games in 2020 and ended the season with .310 team batting average.
Assenza was a four-year member of the Nichols baseball program and graduated first in games played (153), fifth in total bases (210), and eighth in hits (153). He was named to the Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) Second Team as a senior, when he finished fourth in the conference in hits (54). Assenza – who belted a career-high four home runs as a senior – recorded 23 multi-hit games during his final two seasons ‘On the Hill.’
A native of LaGrangeville, N.Y., Assenza graduated with a bachelor’s degree in sport management.
