Baseball Wins Nail-biter Against Worcester State, 9-8

WORCESTER, Mass. (4/13/2026) – The Nichols College baseball team held off a late rally from Worcester State University to secure a 9-8 victory Monday afternoon at Kevin D. Lyons Field. With the bases loaded and no outs at the bottom of the ninth, freshman Abe Anderson closed the door on the Lancers, getting three straight outs to earn his first collegiate save of his career.

With the win, Nichols improves to 13-11 (5-4 CNE) on the season, while Worcester State moves to 12-13.

Nichols came out swinging in the first inning, as Jack Raymond led off with a solo home run before Collin Harty followed later in the frame with a two-run shot to give the Bison an early 3-0 lead. Worcester State answered immediately, erupting for four runs in the bottom half of the inning and adding another in the second to take a 5-3 advantage.

After being held for a few innings, Nichols began to chip away. Ryan Keating drove in a run in the fifth to cut the deficit to one before the Bison broke through in the sixth inning with a four-run rally. Anthony Hackert sparked the inning with a double, while Brady Wendell drove in two runs on a play that resulted in an error. Michael Ucci followed with an RBI triple, and Raymond added a sacrifice fly to cap the inning and give Nichols an 8-7 lead.

The Bison added an important insurance run in the seventh, as Wendell delivered an RBI double to send Hackert home and extend the lead to 9-7. Worcester State threatened late, scoring a run in the eighth and loading the bases in the ninth, but Abe Anderson came in to record the save, stranding the tying and go-ahead runs. Despite Worcester State finishing with 19 hits, Nichols made timely plays when it mattered most to secure the 9-8 victory.

On the mound, Tony Abed earned the win, tossing 5.1 innings while striking out one. The bullpen combined to hold Worcester State down the stretch, highlighted by key innings from Jordan Medeiros and Mitch Brown.

Nichols totaled 13 hits in the contest, led by Anthony Hackert's three-hit performance. Raymond and Harty each homered, while Ucci added two hits and an RBI to pace the offense.

The Bison return home tomorrow for a 2 PM Conference of New England game against Western New England at the Nichols Baseball Field.
