Women's Lacrosse Bested By Mary Washington

Fredericksburg, Va. – The Nichols College women's lacrosse team fell in a non-conference matchup against the University of Mary Washington this afternoon, dropping a 21–2 decision at Battleground Turf Stadium in Fredericksburg, Va.

With the loss the Bison drop to 1-1 (0-0 CNE) while the Eagles improve to 2-4 (0-0 C2C).

First-year Kaylyn Bourque was the lone goal scorer for the Bison, netting two unassisted goals while recording nine shots, seven of which were on target. Cali Melo, Madison St. John, and goalkeeper Briar Slattery each led the team with three ground balls. Melo and Veronica Hill also paced the Bison defensively with two caused turnovers apiece. Goalkeeper Slattery recorded 6 saves facing 27 shots.

Mary Washington found offensive success early, striking just over two minutes into the game at the 13:41 mark before adding another at 10:07 to jump out to a 2–0 lead. First-year Kaylyn Bourque answered for the Bison shortly after, netting Nichols' first goal of the afternoon. The Bison began to find some rhythm as the defense started to settle in, but the Eagles continued to apply pressure, breaking through for three more goals before the end of the first quarter. The momentum carried into the second period, where Mary Washington capitalized on Nichols miscues, scoring seven goals in the frame and adding another on a man-up opportunity. Closing the first half 1-12.

The second half showed brief flashes of pushback from Nichols. The third period opened with the Eagles scoring two quick goals, carrying momentum from the first half, but first-year Kaylyn Bourque responded with her second goal of the day to halt the run. Bourque continued to spark the Bison effort, winning the ensuing draw control and immediately firing a shot that was narrowly saved. Fueled by the first-year's energy, Nichols held the Eagles scoreless for much of the quarter before Mary Washington broke through with two goals in the final three minutes of the period. The fourth quarter proved difficult for the Bison, as the Eagles added five more goals before the final whistle, closing out the contest with a 21–2 result.

Women's Lacrosse will remain in Virginia for the remainder of their Spring Break trip, facing Virginia Wesleyan University on Thursday, March 12 at 4:00 PM at Birdsong Field.
