POTSDAM, N.Y. – The Nichols men's volleyball program rallied from a 2–0 deficit to complete a thrilling comeback victory over NEVC conference opponent SUNY Potsdam Bears this afternoon at Maxcy Hall Field House, winning the final three sets to secure the match.
With the win, the Bison pushed their win streak to 6 games, moving up to 10-8 (3-0 NEVC) while the Bears dropped to 6-4 (1-2 NEVC).
The comeback was led by
Adam Vincent, who recorded his third double-double of the season with 18 kills while hitting .275 and adding a season-high 16 digs. He was supported by
Bryce Bonville and
Bradyn Pomainville, who both reached double figures in kills. Bonville finished with 16 kills while hitting .353, while Pomainville added 12 kills on a .286 clip.
Connor Snow anchored the Bison at the net with three blocks, while
Emmett Jackson and Pomainville each added two.
Evan Sachs delivered a historic performance, dishing out 58 assists to set both a personal best and the program's single-game assist record, surpassing the previous mark of 52 set by Nick Martin in a win over Elms College on February 9, 2022. Defensively,
Cade Bernardi supported Vincent with 14 digs, while Bonville added nine.
Behind Sachs' effort, the Bison also broke the program's single-match team assist record, finishing with 62 assists. The previous mark of 60 had also been set by Nichols earlier this season.
The match opened with both teams feeling each other out, with both programs failing to break away. The Bears opened up first, going on a five to one surge and then soon after a 6 point run, extending the lead to eight, 8-16. The Bison were able to find a few points late from kills by Pomainville and Bonville but Potsdam's lead proved to be enough and they closed out the first set 17-25.
The second set followed a similar pattern, remaining close early on. Potsdam carried momentum from the opening set and gradually built a 14–9 lead. The Bison adjusted and stayed within striking distance, capitalizing on Bears errors while finding points through kills from
Connor Snow and strong defensive play from
Emmett Jackson. However, Potsdam's lead held firm, and the Bears closed out the set 25–19 to take a 2–0 advantage over Nichols.
With momentum slipping away and the Bears eager to close out the match, the Bison entered the third set ready to battle. Potsdam again looked to seize control early, but Nichols refused to let the lead slip away, answering nearly every point with one of their own.The back-and-forth battle continued until the Bison suddenly flipped the switch and began to pull away. The surge started with a kill from
Adam Vincent, followed shortly after by another from
Connor Snow. A block from
Bradyn Pomainville kept the momentum rolling, and back-to-back kills from Vincent and
Austin Gavin pushed the lead to four—Nichols' largest advantage of the match to that point. The Bears attempted a late push, cutting the deficit to two, but the Bison quickly shut the door, closing the set on a three-point run capped off by a final kill from Pomainville.
Riding the momentum from the previous set, the Bison opened the fourth with a kill from
Adam Vincent and never looked back. Nichols maintained control early, refusing to surrender the lead as they strung together several runs throughout the set. A 5–2 stretch—highlighted by a kill from
Evan Sachs and additional finishes from Vincent and
Bradyn Pomainville—helped the Bison create some breathing room. Both teams remained determined, with Potsdam looking to close the match and Nichols fighting to force a decisive fifth set. Late in the frame, the Bison pushed their advantage to four, but the Bears mounted one final push, trimming the lead to 24–23. Vincent ultimately sealed the set with a kill off an assist from Sachs, sending the match to a fifth set with all the momentum on Nichols' side.
The fifth set opened with both teams trading points as neither side could gain clear control. Kills from Vincent, Pomainville, and Snow kept the Bison within striking distance while Sachs continued to run the offense. Potsdam briefly grabbed momentum midway through the set, but Nichols responded and slowly worked their way back. With the score tied late at 13–13, the Bison delivered in the clutch. Bonville recorded back-to-back kills off assists from Sachs to close out the set 15–13, completing the reverse sweep for Nichols.
The Bison will remain on the road for their next contest, traveling back to New York to face the No. 12 ranked Hawks of SUNY New Paltz at the Hawk Center on Wednesday, March 11th at 6:00 PM.
