Men's Lacrosse Stumbles at UMass Boston

BOSTON, Mass. – The Nichols men's lacrosse program dropped in a non conference match against UMass Boston, 9-18 this Saturday afternoon at the James Cotter Field.

With the loss, the Bison drop to 2-2 (0-0 CNE) while Beacons move to 2-0 (0-0 LEC). 

Kane Williams continued his offensive dominance this season, recording his third hat trick with three goals and one assist. Williams also scooped up three ground balls and caused a turnover.
Shea Ullo and Conor Doherty supported the offense with two goals each on six shots. Ullo added two ground balls and two caused turnovers, while Doherty contributed an assist, two ground balls, and a caused turnover. Travis Arnold and Jack Campbell rounded out the scoring for the Bison, with Arnold also collecting nine ground balls and a caused turnover while going 18–28 at the faceoff X. John Caserta helped orchestrate the offense with two assists, while Cole Goudreau and Jackson Hernandez supported the defensive effort with six and four ground balls, respectively.

Goalkeeper Carter Renaud recorded a career high 19 saves while facing 39 shots.

The Beacons were the first to find the back of the net this afternoon, scoring within the first two minutes of the match. The Bison equalized the score, quickly finding a goal from Shea Ullo assisted by Doherty. The Bison held the game quiet for a while, relying strongly on their defense and causing two failed clears from UMass Boston. The quarter ended with two more goals from the Beacons before the quarter ended, putting Nichols on their back foot down 1-3.

The second quarter opened with UMass Boston scoring another goal similarly as the first with it being in the first two minutes. The Beacons continued to build its lead early in the period, but the Bison responded with three goals to cut into the deficit. Ullo got Nichols on the board with his second, followed shortly after by a goal from Arnold. Williams later added another for the Bison, finishing off a feed from Caserta. The Bison headed into the second half being down 4-10.

The second half saw eight more goals from the Beacons as they continued to apply pressure, scoring five in the third quarter to Nichols' one from Conor Doherty. The Bison responded in the fourth, outscoring UMass Boston 4–3—their first quarter win of the game—with goals from Doherty, two from Kane Williams, and one from Jack Campbell.

The Bison hit the road for Spring Break, beginning with a matchup against Alfred University on Tuesday, March 10 at 11:00 AM at Tierney Field (USA Lacrosse) in Sparks, Maryland. Nichols will then travel to Virginia Beach, Virginia to face Virginia Wesleyan University on Thursday, March 12 at 1:00 PM at Birdsong Field
