DUDLEY, Mass. – The Nichols College women's lacrosse team saw its four-game winning streak come to an end this afternoon, falling to conference foe Roger Williams, 12-3, at Bayside Field.
With the loss the Bison take their second loss going 5-2 (3-1 CNE) while the Hawks rise to 4-6 and a perfect in conference (4-0 CNE).
The Bison offense was led by freshman
Kaylyn Bourque, who tallied a team-high two goals and added two draw controls.
Catherine Vetter contributed Nichols' other goal, along with two ground balls and a draw control. On the defensive end, goalkeeper
Briar Slattery anchored the Bison, recording one caused turnover and seven ground balls while making 16 saves on 37 shots faced
Roger Williams set the tone early in the matchup, asserting control from the opening whistle. Breaking the silence first at the 12:05 mark, capitalizing on a free-position opportunity to put the Hawks on the board. The Hawks kept up the pressure helping Roger Williams build a 3-0 lead. The Bison, eager to retaliate, had its first scoring chance with
Makala Dube firing a shot on net, but a crucial save kept the Bison off the scoreboard in the opening minutes. The Hawks' momentum only grew in the second quarter, as Roger Williams unleashed a blistering six-goal run. Despite several defensive stops by
Briar Slattery in goal, the Bison could not stem the tide, heading into halftime trailing 9-0.
Coming out of the break, The Bison were eager to retaliate trying to overcome the grave deficit. Bourque sparked the Bison's offense with an unassisted goal at 13:43 in the third quarter, breaking the Hawks' shutout. Nichols rallied again late in the quarter, with Vetter connecting on a feed from
Gabriella Mandirola to bring the score to 11-2. The Bison carried that momentum into the fourth, as Bourque converted a free-position opportunity to add her second of the day, marking 11-3. Roger Williams, however, answered with a late goal to seal the 12-3 final.
The Bison return to the home for their next contest, facing the Nor'easters of the University of New England this Saturday April 4th at 4:00 PM.
