Herd Highlights: Women's Basketball Graduate Assistant, Samantha Dewey

DUDLEY, Mass. (11/3/2026) – The Nichols College Department of Athletics continues its Herd Highlights series, showcasing the coaches and staff who play an integral role in supporting the development and success of its student-athletes. This week, the series highlights  Samantha "Sam" Dewey who joined the Nichols community this fall as the Women's Basketball Graduate Assistant.

Hailing from Melrose, Massachusetts, Sam Dewey began her collegiate basketball career at the University of Illinois and later transferred to the University of Richmond located in Virginia, where she earned her degree. Her passion for competing at a higher level while pursuing a quality education played a significant role in her decision to continue her basketball career beyond high school.

"I knew that I wanted to continue playing basketball at the highest level possible while also getting an education. Basketball has always been a huge part of my life, and the opportunity to compete collegiately allowed me to continue doing something that I loved while challenging myself both on and off the court."

Her experience as a student-athlete has carried over significantly into her coaching career. Having experienced firsthand the commitment, expectations, and challenges that come with being an athlete, Sam brings a greater sense of empathy and understanding to her coaching approach. She has transitioned from a player receiving instruction to a coach responsible for guiding and developing the next generation of student-athletes.

"Being a student athlete has helped me understand what players are going through on a daily basis. I understand the time commitment, expectations, and challenges that come with academics, basketball, and everyday life. The biggest change has been going from someone who receives instruction to someone who now is helping provide it. I think that having experienced both sides allows me to relate to the players while also understanding the importance of accountability, communication, and building relationships."

Dewey has embraced the welcoming and supportive community at Nichols, particularly enjoying the opportunity to work alongside Head Coach Jacque Rivera. She has greatly valued the experience and collaboration throughout her time with the program.

"The workplace community at Nichols has been very welcoming and supportive. Working under Coach Jacque has given me the opportunity to learn from someone with a lot of experience while continuing to develop my own coaching skills. Being able to work with the team throughout the fall has allowed me to build relationships with the players, coaches, and staff members across the department. Everyone has been willing to help, share ideas, and create an environment where we can all learn from one another. It has made the transition into coaching much easier and has allowed me to feel like part of the Nichols community."

In her role as the Nichols Women's Basketball Graduate Assistant, Sam has embraced the opportunity to learn, grow, and contribute to the Nichols College athletic community. Her experience as a collegiate student-athlete has played a significant role in shaping her coaching philosophy while allowing her to develop her own unique coaching style. She brings discipline, passion, and a commitment to continuous improvement to her work with the program and the student-athletes she helps guide.
