Game Recap: Men's Ice Hockey |

Men’s Ice Hockey Falls to Late Rally at No. 7/8 UNE

BIDDEFORD, Maine (1/23/2026) - The Nichols College men's ice hockey team traveled to the Harold Alfond Forum on Friday night, January 23rd to compete against the No. 7/8 University of New England Nor'easters. After a tough-fought conference match-up defined by scoring in the third period of play, the Bison were handed a loss following a late UNE surge, 2-0.

After the loss, Nichols' record falls to 7-9-0 on the season, with their conference record dropping to 4-7-0. UNE improves their record to 12-5-0, 9-3-0 for games against Conference of New England opponents.

The first period proved to be a stalemate and a demonstration of defense on both sides of the ice. Sophomore goaltender Liam Choquette derailed seven goal-scoring opportunities produced by the Nor'Easters, a key contributor to staying afloat in high-pressure plays such as the two minutes down a skater with the power-play at 10:32 in favor of UNE. At the same time, the Bison were held to only two shots in the first, with little room for shot attempts in consideration of the power-play and blocking efforts of Nor'easter skaters. Following an even first, both times skated off at the horn tied 0-0.

In the second period, the Bison enhanced their shot efforts getting 12 pucks toward the net as a team, applying consistent pressure to try and mount a lead. The tea notably saw the highest shot counts from Jeremy Tremblay with three, followed by Luca Ricci and Christian Holden with two each. A power-play at 5:58 halted the momentum, having the Bison switch their attention to their own goal as UNE had an opportunity to get up late in the second. Choquette continued to stand on his head, racking in a period-high 14 saves to yet again keep the game in even standing, 0-0.

Early in the third, Nichols was assessed for a penalty, giving the Nor'easters two minutes up a skater at 19:05. To make matters trickier for the Bison, yet another power-play in favor of UNE was put in place the following minute. Just seconds after the face-off, the teddy bears were tossed after a 5-on-3 goal was scored, giving UNE the lead late in the game. Following strong face-off wins and continued efforts in puck protection, UNE broke through again for their second goal of the night at 7:42, the even-strength score bolstering the Nor'Easters' lead. Despite the Bison's efforts, UNE left with a point following the conference match-up, Bison lost 0-2.

Men's Ice Hockey will return with their chance at a rematch against UNE tomorrow, January 24th at Levy Rink. Puck drop is set for 3:40 PM.
