HARRISVILLE, R.I. (2/22/2025) – The Nichols College women's hockey team scored four times, and toppled the University of New England, 4-2 on Saturday afternoon from Levy Rink in Conference of New England (CNE) play. The Bison earned the win of the Nor'easters in their season finale.
Sophomore
Anneliese Klein scored twice to lead all scorers, with graduate student
Grace Melanson and freshman
Kerstin Ambruso as the other goal scorers in the win. Melanson added a pair of assists, while Jaskova finished with three assists.
Sophomore
Rhea Bullens also found the score sheet twice with a pair of assists and freshman
Alexis Pacheco added an assist of her own on the fourth Bison goal.
Senior
McKenzie Muir turned aside 45 of 47 shots to secure the final win of her collegiate career.
Nichols opened the scoring just two minutes into the first period. After a face-off win, Jaskova and Melanson found Klein at the top of the blue line. Klein stepped into a slap shot and sent the puck into the top right corner, for a 1-0 Nichols lead.
UNE drew level in the second period with a goal of their own to make it 1-1 with 4:13 gone in the second. A Nor'easter penalty 90 seconds later, put the conference's third best power-play unit on the ice and the Bison went to work. After a shot was blocked in the slot, Ambruso picked the top corner once again of the UNE goaltender and put Nichols back in front, 2-1 with a power-play goal and the second of the season for the first-year.
The chaotic second period continued, as UNE evened the score at 2-2 with a shot in tight that beat Muir. Both teams entered the second period intermission, knotted up a 2-2.
The captain answered the call, halfway through the third period, to make it 3-2 Bison. UNE continued to up the pressure and looked to tilt the ice. The Nor'easters pulled the goalie for the extra attacker, and a blocked shot and a loose puck on the neutral zone. Found Klein's stick, who rifled home the wrist shot into the open goal, to seal the 4-2 Bison win.
Nichols dominated the face-off circle, including Melanson winning 23 of 32 draws for the game. As a team, the Bison finished with 42-73 face-offs (57.5%).
The win for the Bison, calls for a close to the 2024-25 season.
