Nichols continues their success rising to 3-0, while Colby-Sawyer drops to 1-2.
The Bison showed up big in the box score Saturday afternoon, with junior
Rylee Barrieault leading the offense with an electric career-high 27-point performance and 4 rebounds. Barrieault was an absolute sniper from deep, knocking down 7-of-12 from behind the arc, securing the second-most made threes in a single game in Bison history. Graduate student
Summer Klein (15) and senior
Alyvia Smith (14) combined for 29 points, with both knocking down a three. Klein added 7 rebounds, 4 assists, and 2 steals, while Smith contributed 4 rebounds and 4 assists. Freshmen
Jaelize Rivera and
Dakoda Correia played some crucial minutes, as Rivera notched 7 points while Correia produced 4 and the lone block for the Bison. Sophomore
Angie Coletti pulled down a team-high 8 rebounds against the Chargers, while senior
Adriana Romano led the way defensively with 3 steals. As a team, the Bison shot 25-of-66 from the field (37.9%).
After Nichols struck first with two free throws from Coletti, both teams locked in defensively, resulting in a low-scoring first quarter that ended with the Chargers up by two. The Bison responded in the second, going on a 6-point surge and taking the lead on a deep three from Barrieault. Nichols kept their foot on the gas, with defensive pressure from Coletti and Romano , converting on great looks by Smith, and Barrieault lighting up the Chargers from beyond the arc, continuing the rain of threes. The Bison stretched their lead to six heading into the second half.
Nichols opened the second half on fire, putting up 10 points in the first two minutes with Smith and Klein joining the three point barrage. Down the stretch, the Chargers found their rhythm, capitalizing at the charity stripe and eventually pulling even at 45. Both teams battled for momentum, trading baskets with neither able to gain separation. As they headed into the final quarter, the game was knotted at 53 following a pair of free throws from the Chargers.
The Bison opened the fourth quarter looking to create separation, jumping out to a five-point lead and holding the Chargers in check thanks to some quick hands from Romano. Nichols blew the game open with about five minutes remaining, blitzing Colby-Sawyer's defense and building a 10-point cushion sparked by a layup from Smith and the precise shooting from Barrieault. The Bison's lead proved to be enough, as Rivera sank two free throws and Klein delivered the final dagger at the line to secure the 76–67 victory.
Nichols returns to action on Wednesday, November 19 as they travel to Endicott College for their first conference matchup of the season at MacDonald Gymnasium. Tipoff is set for 5:30 PM.
