MILTON, MASS. – The Nichols College women's volleyball team earned a dominant 3-1 (19-25, 25-17, 25-17, 25-18) victory over Curry College in Monday evening's conference matchup at Katz Gymnasium.
After the match, the Bison record improves to 8-16 (2-6 CNE) while the Colonels record drops to 5-15 (0-7 CNE).
Freshman
Alyssa Morse delivered an outstanding offensive performance, recording 13 kills on a .455 hitting percentage along with an ace. Seniors
Kya Burdier and
Melina Bezati added strong support, with Burdier tallying 10 kills on .226 hitting and Bezati contributing 8 kills. Graduate student
Ruby St. Onge set a season high with 7 aces, while senior
Mairead Frost added 4 of her own. The Bison excelled at the net, totaling 6 blocks. Sophomore
Gabrielle McKayle led the defense with 3, while several other Bison chipped in one apiece. St. Onge also dished out 25 assists, and Bezati anchored the back line with a team-leading 9 digs.
Nichols opened the first set with early points from Morse and a service ace by Frost, briefly taking the lead. The Colonels battled back, but the Bison responded with a scoring run fueled by Morse, senior
Maille Ianniruberto, and Burdier, tying the set at 7–7. Both teams continued exchanging points until Curry College went on a 12-2 run, creating a nine-point deficit that put the lead out of reach for the Bison. In one final push, Nichols scored six points from Burdier, Bezati, and Morse, but it wasn't enough, as the Colonels closed out the set 25–19.
The Bison set the tone early in the second set with a thunderous kill from St. Onge, quickly swinging momentum in their favor. Nichols capitalized on Curry errors to surge to an 8–4 lead. Short scoring bursts from Ianniruberto and McKayle kept the Bison ahead. Nichols maintained pressure throughout the set, putting the Colonels on their heels with a relentless series of attacks. In the final stretch, the Bison scored three key points, capped by an ace from St. Onge, sealing the set 25–17 and tying the match at 1–1.
The third set followed a similar pattern, with both teams battling for the lead early. Nichols broke away first with an eight-point run sparked by an error from Curry and offensive contributions from Ianniruberto, Morse, and Burdier. Later, the Bison produced another eight-point surge and closed out the set 25–17, taking a 2–1 lead and setting the stage for the final set.
The fourth and final set was all Nichols, as the Bison grabbed the first three points, highlighted by a kill from Burdier assisted by St. Onge. They continued their dominance, building a 10–7 lead on a kill from Morse and keeping the pressure on Curry. Nichols extended their advantage to 20–13, and the seven-point deficit proved insurmountable for the Colonels. Ianniruberto delivered the final kill to seal the set 25–18 and secure the match victory, 3–1.
The Bison will be back in action again at the Emerson Gymnasium to face Wheaton College (10-15, 2-6 NEWMAC) for a non conference match up on Thursday, October 30th at 7:00 PM.
