Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Vazquez Drops 32, Bison Squeak Past Curry, 71-66

MILTON, Mass. (1/4/24) – The Nichols College women's basketball kept their win streak alive on Saturday afternoon with a 71-66 victory over Conference of New England (CNE) host Curry College inside Katz Gymnasium.

The Bison have now posted wins in three straight contests and improve to 8-2 (2-2 CNE) overall.

Abrianna Vazquez led the Bison attack with 32 points on 11-of-28 (39.3%) shooting, matching her season-high total as well as four rebounds and three steals. Adriana Romano also notched double-figures in the win, scoring 10 points along with a game-high six steals. Nichols finished the game with 26-of-72 shooting (36.1%), and scored 42 points off of 43 Curry turnovers.

Despite forcing 13 Curry turnovers, the opening frame was kept close in the scoring department for both sides, with the Bison only holding a two-point edge at 12-10 after one. Entering the second quarter, Nichols picked up the scoring as they fired off eight unanswered points through the first three minutes, including back-to-back layups from Vazquez, to extend their lead to 20-10. However, Curry countered with a strong finish to the quarter, ending the half on a 10-0 run to flip the lead in their favor, 30-26 at the break.

After a flurry of baskets between both teams early in the second, the Bison began slowly trimming away at the Curry lead, moving as close as three points on a Cali Melo triple with 00:11 left in the third. It all came down to the wire in the fourth quarter, with the Bison eventually claiming the lead back on another triple from Aydan Gulliver with 6:52 left. However, Curry failed to back down, with both sides drawing even again at 60-all.  After over two minutes of scoreless play, the Bison returned to the lead at 62-60 after Vazquez hit a breakaway layup off a heads-up pass from Adison Whitty, moments before hitting another jumper at 2:17 to make it a four-point contest. Nichols continued on to secure the win over the remaining time, scoring six of the final eight points scored on free throws.

The Bison will next host the University of Hartford (4-6, 2-1) for their Staff and Faculty Game on Tuesday, January 7th at 5:00 PM.
