DUDLEY, Mass. (1/28/2025) – The Nichols College women's basketball program made it two-for-two in the regular season series against Gordon College on Tuesday night, defeating the Fighting Scots 87-74 on "Pink Out" night at the Nichols Athletic Center.
The Bison halt a three-game losing streak and improve to 11-7 (4-7 CNE) with the victory, while the Fighting Scots drop to 6-12 (3-8 CNE) with the loss.
The Bison had four scorers in double figures, with
Abrianna Vazquez leading the way behind 25 points on 6-of-18 (33.3%) shooting and two steals.
Alyvia Smith scored 18 points and had a pair of assists, while
Summer Klein scored 17 points respectively, alongside four steals. Adrianna Romano scored 10 points in the effort, and also nabbed four steals. All four players additionally tallied four rebounds apiece.
Smith sparked the offense in the first quarter with a pair of early three-point jumpers that gave the Bison a 10-4 edge three minutes in. Gordon responded by scoring the next two baskets, which came over a whopping 4:30 span, until Vazquez broke Nichols' scoring drought with two makes at the free throw line. The Bison ended the quarter with a 6-0 run, increasing their lead to 20-12 after one.
Both sides came out shooting in the second quarter, but the Bison would only continue to add to their lead with Smith knocking down a third triple with 4:00 left to bring the difference to double digits, 32-22. Nichols even saw their lead climb as high as 14 points late in the quarter, thanks to a layup from
Angie Coletti in the final two minutes. At the break, Nichols led the Fighting Scots by 11 points at 39-28.
While Gordon held the scoring advantage in the third quarter, 28-21, Nichols made the most of their chances in the final frame, landed four three-pointers while going 7-of-16 (43.7%) from the field for their best single-quarter shooting performance of the night. Gordon managed to hang around the rest of the way through, but to no avail as a series of Vazquez free throws late helped the Bison reinforce their lead to double-digits in the final minute, finishing off the 87-74 Bison victory at home.
The Bison continue CNE play at 1:00 PM this upcoming Saturday, February 1
st against Curry College (6-12, 3-8 CNE) at the Nichols Athletic Center.
