DUDLEY, Mass. (9/25/24) – The Nichols College women's tennis team pieced together one of their best performances of the season on Wednesday afternoon, defeating in-state opponent Western New England University, 6-1 in CNE play at the Robinson Tennis Courts.
With the win, the Bison improve to 4-1 (2-0 CNE) overall. The Golden Bears, with the loss, fall to 2-3 (0-2 CNE).
The Bison carried a 1-0 lead over into singles play after sweeping through doubles action. The Bison first saw a 6-0 shutout at No. 1 doubles from freshman duo
Kamora Helton and
Pamela Gonzalez Vallardi, which was then followed with an equally dominant effort on court three from
Cora Brosch and
Charis Vogler, locking up the doubles point for the hosts.
Antonia Carrero and
Kiley O'Brien completed the sweep with a close 7-6 victory at No. 2 doubles.
In singles play, it was all Nichols. The Bison blanked the competition 6-0, 6-0 at each of the first four positions, with the sweeping victories belonging to Helton, Carrero, Gonzalez Vallardi and senior
Johanna Schroeder. The final win on the day for the Bison came from fellow senior
Bethany Prendergast at No. 5 singles, where she triumphed in two sets by scores of 6-1, 6-0 to put Nichols up 6-0 in the match.
Sophomore
Erin Helly battled at No. 6 singles, winning her second set 6-2 to force a decisive third set. Western New England went on to win the tiebreaker 10-7, rounding out the 6-1 final score.
Women's Tennis will take a brief pause from conference play with a road matchup at Bryant University on Friday, September 27
th before hosting in-conference rival Endicott College (3-3, 2-0 CNE) at home on Saturday, September 28
th at 1:00 PM.
