BRISTOL, R.I. (9/17/24) - The Nichols College women's tennis team claimed victory in its conference opener on Tuesday evening, downing host Roger Williams University by a final score of 6-1.
The Bison improve to 2-0 (1-0 CNE) overall following the win, while the Hawks drop to 5-2 (0-1 CNE) with the loss.
Nichols dominated the match early-on by securing the doubles point with wins at all three positions. The No. 2 duo of
Antonia Carrero and
Johanna Schroeder highlighted the doubles action with a 6-0 shutout of their opponent, while the other two Bison combinations of
Kamora Helton/
Pamela Gonzalez Vallardi and
Charis Vogler/
Cora Brosch each won their respective matchups by scores of 6-2.
In singles, Vogler was the first to finish following a win by matching scores of 6-1, 6-1 on court five. Shortly thereafter, Carrero cruised to a 6-0, 6-1 victory at No. 2 singles, just before Brosch clinched the match for the Bison behind winning scores of 6-3, 6-3 on court six.
Despite Roger Williams snagging one point in singles play, the Bison padded their lead thanks to the efforts Schroeder and Helton, who took respective wins at No. 4 and No. 1 singles. Schroeder defeated her Roger Williams opponent 6-3, 6-0, while Helton bounced back to force a three-set tiebreak (6-7, 6-3, 10-6) to win.
It's a quick turnaround for the Bison, who will next host Colby-Sawyer College for a non-conference match on Wednesday, September 18
th beginning at 4:00 PM.
