Tennis Falls to Polar Bears in NCAA Second Round

Brunswick, Maine (5/11/24) – In second-round action at the NCAA regional in Brunswick, Maine, the Nichols College men's tennis team fell to regional hosts Bowdoin 0-5 to finish their post-season run.

Outside on the Pickard Tennis Courts, the Bison were out flying, staying tight in all three doubles positions, and leading 4-2 at number two doubles. Midway through doubles play, the match was delayed due to rain. This resulted in a near-two-hour pause in the match between the Bison and Polar Bears. After the lengthy delay, it was decided that the match would be relocated to indoor facility Maine Pines to resume.

Once the match restarted, the momentum swung in favor of the Polar Bears. After dropping decisions at both one and three doubles (8-4 at one, 8-2 at three), a now tightly contested 5-5 match continued at number two between Ethan Bradley & Jackson Codd of Bowdoin, and Nichols' Caio Dieckmann and Richard Hartmann Zuzio. The match was a battle for each point, but untimely sided in the Polar Bear's favor 8-5. The Bison found themselves trailing 3-0 after doubles play.

Once singles action began, the match was clinched for the Polar Bears with wins at the number three and six positions. In his match at two, senior Trevor Schwarzmann lost the first set 6-4 but was leading 1-0 in set two when the match was called in favor of the Polar Bears. With the match being played to a decision, the final score stood at 5-0 Polar Bears.

Bowdoin advances to Sunday's regional final against the winner of Williams and RPI. The match time is set for noon. Nichols settles its campaign with a 14-8 record, including its 2024 CCC Championship.
