PREVIEW: No. 1 Men’s Tennis Set to Host No. 4 Gordon in CCC Semifinal

DUDLEY, Mass. (5/1/24) – The number one seeded Nichols College Men's Tennis Team enjoyed a bye though the CCC First Round and are now set to begin their postseason play in the semi-final round against the number four seed Gordon College Fighting Scots on Wednesday May 1st in Dudley. The match will take place on the Robinson Tennis Courts and is set for a 4 PM start time.

Last Trip to the Postseason: The Bison are defending Commonwealth Coast Conference Champions, as they topped Roger Williams in the title math 5-0, before an NCAA tournament appearance. In NCAA action, the Bison topped Houghton 5-0 in the first round, before falling to No. 11 nationally ranked Bowdoin in round two. Gordon College fell in postseason action last season to Roger Williams in the semi-final 1-5, following a 5-0 win over Salve Regina in the quarterfinal round 5-0.

2023-24 Season Series: The Bison and Fighting Scots have met once this season on Tuesday April 9th. Nichols took the win in that match 8-1. In that match's doubles action, there were tight 8-7 wins at both the number one and two positions. At number three Trevor Schwarzmann and his partner Enzo Matos Balleux were commanding, coming out with a 8-1 win. In singles play, there was a similar tight battle. The Bison took 5 of the 6 possible points, all of which were in straight sets. Those came via number one Leon Zeis (7-5, 6-2), number two Schwarzmannn (6-3, 6-2), number three Richard Hartmann Zuzio (6-3, 6-1), number four Matos Balleux (6-3, 6-0) and number five Caio Dieckmann (6-2, 6-3). Oscar Junyent fell in a tiebreak set at number six. The Fighting Scots earned their berth in the CCC semi-final by way of a 5-1 victory over the visiting No. 5 seed Wentworth Leopards last Saturday.

Who to Watch: Nichols has been dominant across all singles and doubles positions this season in CCC action. Leading the way for the Bison is CCC Player of the Year Leon Zeis. He has been a lock all season in the number one position for the Bison, going undefeated in singles play, and dropping just one game in doubles action.

Joining Zeis is two-time player of the week honoree senior Trevor Schwarzmann. He's undefeated in both singles and doubles action and got honored this week as a first-team all-conference for singles, and second-team all-conference for doubles.

The Bison lineup will be rounded out by the powerhouses of first-team honorees Enzo Matos Balleux, Richard Hartmann Zuzio, and Kerem Subasi. Senior Caio Dieckmann will round out the lineup for the Bison as he is undefeated this season for the Bison appearing in various positions for the black-and-green this season.

When asked about the matchup CCC Coach of the Year Ron Gendron said "Last time we played Gordon, it was a very competitive match. Their athleticism is very obvious and we enjoy playing quality opponents. We are looking forward to challenging semi-final and I really believe our schedule has prepared us for the tournament. Lastly, I also feel we are peaking and playing the best tennis we have played all year."
