DUDLEY, Mass. (4/6/24) – The Nichols College women's lacrosse team came up short on Senior Day against the University of New England, falling by a score of 14-11 at Vendetti Field.
The Bison are now 10-3 (1-2 CCC) on the season, while the Nor'easters improve to 5-6 (3-1 CCC).
Sophomore
Emma Patton and junior
Hadley Houghton each had three points for the Bison, with Patton scoring twice with one assist, and Houghton netting a hat trick. Sophomore
Caitlin Welch also scored twice in the effort, while
Makala Dube,
Kristen Ruby and
Paige Alexander each added individual goals.
UNE jumped out to an early 3-0 lead through the first five and a half minutes of play before the Bison scored back-to-back goals exactly six minutes apart to cut the deficit to 3-2. The first of the two goals was an unassisted marker by Patton, while the second belonged to Houghton, also unassisted. In the final minute of play, both teams found the back of the net one final time, with Welch scoring her first of the game at 00:05 to make it a 4-3 UNE lead after one.
The Bison knotted the game at 4-4 just 2:11 into the second frame after Houghton scored her second goal in the evening on a free position attempt. Moments later, Patton also added her second goal of the contest to give the Bison their first lead, 5-4 with 9:20 remaining in the half. UNE then snuck in two of the final three goals, leading the two teams to a 6-6 stalemate at the break.
Dube connected with Welch on a man-up situation for Nichols 51-seconds into the second half, but the Nor'easters quickly responded at 12:56 to keep the game tied at 7-7. From there, things unraveled for Nichols, as the Nor'easters outscored the Bison by a 6-2 margin to carry a comfortable 13-9 lead into the fourth quarter.
Both sides would only score once in the final period, resulting in the 14-10 final score.
In goal, senior
Keri Tremblay (1-1) took the loss after making two saves against the Nor'easters. Sophomore
Briar Slattery also saw time in the crease, stopping 7-of-17 shots faced.
Women's lacrosse hosts CCC opponent Curry College (4-7, 0-2 CCC) for its Morgan's Message game on Wednesday, April 10th at 4:00 PM.
