Softball Splits Non-Conference Series at UMass-Boston

BOSTON, Mass. (4/25/2024) - The Nichols College Softball team split a non-conference doubleheader against UMass Boston on Thursday afternoon at the UMB Softball Field.

With the split, the Bison move to 18-16 (7-5 CCC) overall while the Beacons move to 23-9 (8-4 LEC).

Game 1: Nichols 1 UMass Boston 4

After falling behind 1-0 in the bottom of the first inning, the Bison scored the equalizer in the top of the fifth courtesy of a Kyla Felicani RBI-single that snuck sophomore Riley Chartier home, leveling the score at 1-1.

The Beacons responded quickly with a run of their own in the bottom of the fifth to jump back in front, 2-1. From there, two more runs made their way across home plate for the Beacons in the sixth to stretch the lead to 4-1, resulting in a win for UMass Boston.

Sophomore Olivia Pedro (5-8) pitched five innings, allowing five hits and one earned run with three strikeouts. Pedro was relieved by first-year Ally McNamee, who finished out the game with just one hit allowed.

Game 2: Nichols 2 UMass Boston 1

The Bison got off to a hot start in the back end of the double header, starting with a lead-off double to right-center field by junior Erin Gour in the second inning. Two batters later, senior Mackenzie Jackson took a free base after getting hit by a pitch, placing runners on first and second. Sophomore Emily Iannuccilli then laid down a sacrifice bunt, which allowed Gour to round third and score due to a Beacon fielding error to make it 1-0 Bison. However, the inning was not done, as senior Lily Fangel was able to score Jackson on a sac-fly to center field, increasing Nichols' lead to 2-0 in the second.

The Beacons managed to scratch a run across in the fifth inning but came up empty handed the rest of the way as Nichols prevailed in game two by a 2-1 final score.

First-year Cassidy Machado (4-2) battled through 4.1 innings, allowing just one earned run on four hits with four strikeouts. Junior Chelsea Indyk closed the game out for the Bison, pitching three scoreless innings and allowing three hits for her third save of the season.

The Bison return to action on Saturday, April 27th for their final home doubleheader of the regular season against Wentworth Institute of Technology (19-13, 7-3 CCC). The games are slated for 12:00 p.m. and 2:00 p.m. at the Nichols Softball Field.
