USCGA Snaps Bison Win Streak

DUDLEY, Mass. (4/24/2024) – The Nichols College baseball team's seven-game win streak was snapped at the hands of the United States Coast Guard Academy on Wednesday afternoon from Nichols Baseball Field. The Bears topped the Bison 21-12.

Senior Johnny Knox was a perfect 4-4 with five runs scored and an RBI, while teammate Brennan Hyde stayed hot, going 4-5 with three RBI for the home team. Sophomore Liam Flynn hit a grand slam as well.

The Bears opened the scoring in the first when they launched a three-run home run with no outs to take a 3-0 lead. The Bison offense responded nicely with a five run bottom half of the inning, to take a 5-3 lead. Senior Ben Jerome worked a lead-off walk and then reached third on a failed pick off by the pitcher. Knox singled and scored Jerome.

Hyde singles to put two runners on base. Graduate student Will Kleinhenz reached on a fielder's choice and senior Andrew Croteau walked to load the bases with one out. Flynn launched a home run over the right field fence to give Nichols a 5-3 lead.

Both teams traded runs in the second inning and Nichols added another run in the fourth inning off a Hyde single that scored Knox. Nichols led 7-4. In the fifth inning, things unraveled for the Bison when they allowed seven runs to Coast Guard and trail 11-7.

The Bears added two more runs to lead 13-7. Nichols gained two runs back off the bat of Hyde once again, with a single that scored Knox and graduate student Jim Marasco. Coast Guard added another run in the top of the eighth to lead 14-9.

A Nichols comeback fell short, as they fell 21 -12 after another crooked number put up by the visitors.

The Bison (21-9, 6-5 CCC) will get back on the road and travel to Clark University for an afternoon match up on Thursday, April 25. First pitch is set for 3:30 p.m.
