Balanced Attack Leads Bison to Program Record 12th Win at Wentworth

BOSTON, Mass. (4/20/24) - Eight different Bison found the back of the net as the Nichols College Women's Lacrosse team prevailed over Wentworth Institute of Technology, 19-6 in Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) play on Saturday afternoon at Sweeney Field.

With their 12th win of the season, the Bison surpassed the program's all-time season win count, beating out the 2022 campaign. The record-breaking victory improves Nichols' record to 12-4 (3-3 CCC) overall, while the Leopards fall to 0-11 (0-6).

Sophomore attacker Caitlin Welch led the charge for the Bison by providing her 3rd five-goal outing of the season alongside a pair of ground balls. Junior midfielder McKenzie Muir stuffed the stat sheet with a season-high four-goals, while also adding defensive support by grabbing seven ground balls.  Junior midfielder Hadley Houghton contributed five points of her own, additionally tallying a match-high five draw controls.

The Bison took the lead in the first 40 seconds and never looked back, opening the game with a 4-0 run that was capped off with a Kristen Ruby goal. Wentworth snatched a goal back before a one-two-three punch by Patton, Alexander, and Houghton which increased the Bison lead to 7-1. However, the Leopards remained resilient, scoring the next two goals and finishing out the quarter down 7-3.

The two lone goals of the second frame came by way of the sophomore stars of Welch and Muir to expand the Bison lead to 9-2 heading into the halftime break.

Welch and Muir took control of the second half for the Bison, combining for five of the next six goals to further the lead to 12-4. The Leopards pulled a goal back before the Bison finished the third quarter on a four-goal run that was capped off with a Houghton assist which marked her 100th point on the season and brought the Bison lead to 16-5. Nichols continued the scoring run into the fourth period using goals from Sarah King, Emily Newton, and Welch before being interrupted by a Leopards point to bring the final tally to 19-6.

Senior goalkeeper Keri Tremblay stopped nine shots in the effort, improving to 2-0 on the season.

With one regular season game remaining, the Bison return home to host Western New England University (6-10, 4-2 CCC) on Wednesday, April 24 for a 4:00 PM start at Vendetti Field.
