BRISTOL, R.I. (4/16/2024) - In a back-and-forth contest, the Nichols College Men's Lacrosse team dropped a Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) matchup, 7-4, against rival Roger Williams University on Tuesday afternoon at Bayside Field.
With the setback, the Bison fall to an even 8-7 (3-3 CCC) while the Hawks improve to 12-4 (5-2 CCC).
The Hawks took less than four minutes to find the back of the net to take an early 1-0 lead before junior attacker Dylan DeRubeis put a shot away from close range to score his 18th goal of the season and bring the Bison level at 1-1 with nine minutes remaining in the frame. The Hawks continued to build pressure on the Bison by responding in less than a minute to regain the lead at 2-1. Forty seconds later first-year midfielder Shea Ullo bagged the equalizer from a slick feed from sophomore Conor Doherty to bring the score to 2-2. Roger Williams continued their scoring form by grabbing two more goals before the end of the quarter to finish the first quarter up 4-2.
The back-and-forth scoring was no different in the second quarter as Doherty scored in his fifth straight game before the Hawks took advantage of a man-up opportunity to bring the score to 5-3. With just a minute to play in the frame, Doherty scored his 9th goal in 5 games to bring the Bison within one at 5-4 heading into the break. The Bison continued to fight but to no avail as the two lone goals of the second half were scored by the Hawks to round out the scoring and finish the game at 7-4.
Junior goalkeeper Brady Morgan recorded 10 saves on 16 shots but ultimately saw his record fall to 8-8 on the season. Morgan was relieved by sophomore Carter Renaud late in the fourth quarter.
Up next for the Bison is a CCC bout against Wentworth on the road. The game is slated for Saturday, April 20th at 6:00 p.m. at Sweeney Field in Boston, Massachusetts.
