Bison Stumble in Second Half, Fall to Roger Williams 83-58

DUDLEY, Mass. (12/7/24) – It was a tale of two halves for the Nichols College women's basketball team on Monday, as they could not replicate their solid first half performance against conference opponent Roger Williams University, resulting in an 83-58 setback at the Nichols Athletic Center.

Nichols drops to 5-2 (1-2 CNE) overall with the loss, while the Hawks improve to 4-3 (2-0 CNE).

Graduate student Abrianna Vazquez led the Bison with 25 points on 7-of-15 (46.7%) shooting, and a 3-of-6 (50.0%) clip from beyond the arc. Freshman Juliana Brimecombe controlled the board for the Bison, hauling in a team-high four rebounds along with two steals and an assist. As a team, Nichols shot 19-of-63 (30.2%) from the field, generating 16 points off of Hawk turnovers.

Nichols ran into some early foul trouble in the opening quarter, with Roger Williams leading by a 16-10 margin through the first 10 minutes of play. However, the second quarter was a different story for the home team as the Bison stormed back to tie the score at 33-all, thanks to a 14-2 run that ended with eight straight points from Vazquez. The two teams would lock up one more time at 35-35 with 1:09 left to play in the half, before a final tip-in layup by the Hawks sent the teams to the locker rooms with Roger Williams leading, 37-35.

In the third quarter, the Hawks opened the flood gates with a 10-4 run through the first three minutes. From there, their lead continued to increase to as many as 20 points on a made layup at the 2:11 mark, prior to Vazquez knocking down another triple following two free throws by Alyvia Smith to bring the difference back down to 15 points. Roger Williams ended the quarter with their own pair of made free throws and entered the fourth quarter in front by 17 at 64-47.

The Hawks kept up their attack in the fourth, opening with a 15-point run to put the score well out of reach, 79-47. They went on to eventually win the game, despite Nichols Isabella Lopez-Marin scoring both of the final baskets in the final minute.

The Bison have one game remaining before the holiday break, which will occur on Thursday, December 12th against non-conference opponent Mitchell College (2-2, 0-0 GNAC). Tip-off is scheduled for a 5:30 PM start right back at the Nichols Athletic Center.
