DUDLEY, Mass. (11/9/24) – The Nichols College women's volleyball program closed the cover on the 2024 season on Saturday, as they dispatched conference opponent Curry College, 3-0 on Senior Night at the Nichols Athletic Center.
The Bison finish the season with a 6-19 (2-7 CNE) overall record.
It was only fitting that both seniors were leaders in the winning effort for Nichols. Outside hitter
Luna Colozzo paced the offense with eight kills on .455 hitting, while also leading the defensive effort with nine digs. On the other side, setter
Ruby St. Onge delivered a match-high 21 assists, which was her second highest total this season. Graduate student libero
Liz Diorio accounted for five of Nichols' 11 service aces, while the team finished hitting .309 for their best single-match performance this season. Fellow graduate student
Haylee Granato delivered six kills and six digs in her respective final match with the program.
Curry scored the first three points of the match before Nichols stormed away with a 12-2 run, scoring five points on combined service aces from Colozzo and Diorio. From there, Curry struggled to find their way back into the set, as the Bison increased their lead to as many as 12 points late on back-to-back Colonel errors. Sophomore middle hitter
Maille Ianniruberto would eventually deliver the winning kill for the Bison, sending them in front 1-0 by way of a 25-13 score in the first set.
The Bison once again took advantage of numerous Curry errors as they claimed an early 7-2 advantage in the second stanza. The teams then traded points before the Bison tallied five unanswered points that included four more Curry miscues to make it a 17-8 score, before a St. Onge kill followed by a fifth Curry error made it 19-8. Shortly thereafter, Ianniruberto would again deliver the closing remarks for Nichols, firing off back-to-back kills to win the frame, 25-11.
Nichols opened the third set with a 10-4 lead as St. Onge found Ianniruberto for a kill. After a single bad set, the Bison utilized an 8-0 run to extend their lead to 18-5, highlighted by three Colozzo kills. The lopsided difference would prove too great to overcome for the Colonels, with Nichols completing the sweep via a 25-8 win in the third.
